Drape Front Crochet Cardigan
Drape Front Crochet Cardigan
More than a year ago I crocheted a drape front cardigan that can be tied at the waist. The cardigan is soft to the touch and warm as I used an alpaca, wool, and acrylic blend yarn. To make a small cardigan (european size 36) I used seven skeins of 4ply yarn, each weighing 50 gr and measuring 350 m in length, and a 3.50 mm crochet hook.
The cardigan is made from rectangle, as shown below.
The cardigan is made from rectangle, as shown below.
The width of the cardigan measured between the armpits is 44 cm, whereas the sides (from the armpit holes to the outer edges) measure 34 cm. The total length of the cardigan is 72 cm. Each sleeve hole is 17 cm long, starts 13 cm from the top of the work piece and ends 42 cm from the bottom. The length of the sleeve holes can be increased if one prefers looser sleeves. I suggest you take your favourite cardigan or sweater and check the dimensions against those shown on the schema above. In this way you will save time, since you will know exactly what measurements the cardigan should have.
Sleeves can be made in many different ways, including by starting from the sleeve holes (which allows the cardigan to be seamless), or sleeves can be made separately and then sewn to the cardigan. Sleeves can be straight, tapered towards the wrist, or form a cap so that the cardigan fits in nicely in the shoulders.
I made sleeves with small caps which were slightly tapered towards the wrist.
I made the cardigan according to the slanting diamonds pattern, shown below. You start with a multiple of four chains, plus five extra.

To the cardigan I sewed a few button poppers so that it can be fastened. I also made an I-cord from matching yarn on a knitting machine, which could be used to tie the cardigan around the waist.
Unfortunately, I don't have this cardigan anymore (it found its new place in the world), and I only have one (not particularly sharp) picture of it.
